Kanye West has found himself facing criticism for accepting $3 million
to travel to Kazakhstan and perform at the wedding reception for the
grandson of President Nursultan Nazarbayev on Saturday.
Nazarbayev, the autocratic ruler of Kazakhstan since the fall of the Soviet Union, has been accused of human rights abuses including a crackdown on striking oil workers in 2011 that left more than a dozen dead.
Over the weekend, pictures from the wedding reception started to make their way online, showing Kanye posing with guests and performing on an otherwise empty stage for the VIPs in attendance. This comes about two years after Sting cancelled a performance in Kazakhstan specifically because of Nazarbayev's human rights record, and just a few months after Jennifer Lopez performed for Turkmenistan's President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov.Lopez faced harsh criticism for performing under a similar set of circumstances, and later apologized, but didn't say whether she'd returned her fee. West has yet to address the controversy.
