No Nigerian University among the top 200

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2013-14 is utterly dominated by American universities, which hold 77 of the top 200 places.

Just 26 countries are represented in the top 200, with the US followed by the UK (31), the Netherlands (12), Germany (10) and seven each in Switzerland, Australia and Canada.

Ireland punches above its weight in the overall rankings, with two places in the top 200 – Trinity College Dublin and UCD.

This compares with just one university from Austria, Finland, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan and Turkey.

China has just two in the top 200, but both, crucially, are listed in the top 50.
Just 16 countries are represented in the top 100 rankings, which are also dominated by the 45 institutions based in the US.

They are followed by the UK (11), Netherlands (8), Germany (6) and Australia (five).
